giro 'd Alta

I'm in the arctic working on my cycling tan.  It's in the 60's here but when the sun comes out from behind the clouds its hot!

Jen found me walking out of "customs" in Oslo and we soon met Mike from Wahington who had just gone bike touring after living in Norway for a year.  We talked all night (midnight 'till 2:30am) and we giot some good advise .  The next day (4am) we rechecked our luggage and watched Mike check about 300 pounds of luggage for free.  I have managed to get my bike checked for free so far.

We arrived in Alta at noon and raced to assemble our bikes.  Jen had a big lead but somehow I caught up for the tie.  My Rohloff didn't leak thanks to Dr Albertelli telling me how to write "side up" in Norweigen on the bike box.  With our gear reorganized we departed in the wrong direction for 10k and came back to Alta where I cracked.  Mostly because I had slept only 5 hours in the previous 50.  Plus some jetlag.  We went to a campground where we met some others riding north.  I talked to some Italian guy as the sun hid behind a mountain at midnight.  It came back up by 1am.  The whole 24 hours of sun is kinda weird.  Sometiomes at night

Food seems to be okay.  The salami from the gas station was surprisingly good and wrapping it around pemmican makes that taste better.  And we found fresh warm bread at a gas station that served its purpose:calories.  We just hit a grocery store this morning and loaded up.  So far the only thing I miss from the states is flying cloud dairy.

Hello Kurt,

I am glad to hear you made it safely and were able to find Jen without a hitch. Just a little pointer when you are holding a map make sure North is up... Just saw Dr Rich Eileen is missing your Tuesday visits already. Warm bread in a gas station; I don't expect that Mobile will be signing on for that anytime soon. Hope to see some photos.

Happy pedaling,

Jen
