sweeden

we're in central sweeden, roughly 40 kms SE of mora.  much flatter here than norway, but the endless trees make us feel like we're riding a hamster wheel in central maine.  rain most days, and today a headwind and busy road.  kurt's in the bike shop right now trying to find a way into stockholm.  bikes aren't allowed on the trains and busses..... hmmm.

we went through a 15 km section of road construction with loose gravel.  i managed to crash a little.  apparently panniers are better than bob in the loose stuff since they put more weight on the front wheel.

anyhow, my brain's a little fried though my hair is clean since i washed it in a gas station bathroom sink this morning.  not much creativity here, but we're safe and sound and it's still light past 9pm.

Jen,

I'm not sure if Kurt had any luck with tips on how to get into stockholm - if so you can probably ignore what I have to say... otherwise:

You can take bikes on the Pendeltag (commuter train) provided that a) it's not rush hour [6-9, 15-18] and b) you don't get off at the main station. For your purposes, I think that Balsta (or Marsta if you go through Uppsala) will probably be the closest from the direction you are going. http://sl.se/ficktid/karta%2Fsommar/Ptag.pdf If you get off at Karlberg (one before the central station) it shouldn't be too dificult to find your way to the ferry by bike.

Of note: Stockholm Stockholm does have a decent set of bike paths that have been developed over the past 10years in order to encourage people to commute by bike.

Also, if you want to bike in, the touring federation has an official route passing through Sala. While it may not be in your budget to buy the official map, I had decent luck when I was touring on a different stretch by just following the sign posts marked for Sverigeleden.

Anyhow, we enjoy reading about your adventure, and I wish I was there.

good luck

oops, meant to attach this as well, not that it's a big help:
